Grant's Toboggan
During the last few
years since I created the plans for my
Ultralight Canoe
and
Modified Pirogue
, I've been very busy increasing the size of my family.
As a result, a lot of my creative time has been less focused on boats and more
on kids stuff. Kids furniture and toys to be specific. I plan to add more plans
for these items
as time allows, but I just finished building a great winter project for the kids
and I thought I'd try and offer the plans for the holidays.
After a snowy winter last year and just a cheap plastic crazy carpet for the hills, I decided to build a toboggan for my kids. I looked around and could only find old fashioned toboggan plans from the 1930's or 40's. With my experience building boats out of thin skin plywood being very positive, I decided to try an idea that had been developing in my mind for the last few months. The result is an easy to build, lightweight toboggan about 5 1/2 feet long and a 1 1/2 feet wide. It is large enough for an adult and two small kids. The toboggan can be built in 2 or 3 days. Finishing could take 2 more (or however long you need to get the finish you want). The cost depends on how much material you already have. I had almost everything left over from other projects so I built mine for about $10 - only because I had to buy a tube of glue and some sandpaper. If you had to buy every single item on the list you would probably max out at around $65 and you'll likely have some materials left over.
Here are some photos of the toboggan taken before it was completely
finished.
