A Cajun style pirogue is the perfect small craft for exploring and fishing
sheltered lakes and ponds or small, shallow rivers. Extremely stable, you can
stand up in a pirogue. A pirogue only draws a couple of inches of water, which
allows the user to paddle or pole right over many obstructions that will stop a
traditional canoe.
When I was researching my first boat to build, I decided on the pirogue not
only for the reasons listed above, but also for how easy they are to build.
Even though I designed my own from scratch and modified the traditional style
(length and depth) it only took a week or so to get the hull finished. This was
with no previous boat building experience whatsoever.
I've now refined this boat so it
can be built in 7 sessions
which can be completed in one weekend (however most people prefer
not to rush and take a week or more).
I designed and built a pirogue style canoe, about 11' 6" long, 11" deep and 30"
wide. It had approximately 2" of rocker. It was constructed of 1/4-inch Luan
plywood, fiberglass tape and resin, a few scraps of lumber and a few brass
screws. It weighed in at around (plus or minus) 45lb.

I wanted to be able to row or paddle this boat, so I could row when I wanted to
cover distance quickly and pole or paddle when I wanted to go slow or sneak up
on wildlife.
I ended up giving my pirogue away to a neighbor but I actually wish I still had
her. I intend to build another one soon. It seems like the more boats you have
the more you need.
